Details

The Mount Wind Ensemble will present a fall program of music from and related to Russia. Besides this nationalist theme the program highlights works that are historically important to the development of the Wind Ensemble. Shostakovich’s much loved and technically challenging Festive Overture arranged for band by Donald Hunsberger helped differentiate nimble soloistic Wind Ensembles from the larger section-oriented playing of bands. Alfred Reed’s setting of Russian Christmas Music and Bruce Houseknecht’s transcription of Tschnokoff’s Salvation is Created are both drawn from the Russian Orthodox repertoire and have become mainstays of wind band concerts. The most recent arrangement on the program is Ira Hearshen’s Symphonic Dances from “Fiddler on the Roof.” This piece motivically develops the instrumental music and dance sequences from Sheldon Harnick and Jerry Bock’s much-loved musical. Free Admission and open to the public.
