The rise of women in the workforce was arguably one of the most significant changes in the economy in the past century. With education and experience, some women have reached top leadership positions in their companies, thereby shattering the glass ceiling that once loomed overhead. Yet, gender discrimination and harassment continue to exist, and with the Me Too movement, these issues have been brought to the forefront of the workplace and society. The movement has given an awareness to these issues that was long overdue but given the unintended consequences that emerged in the past year, companies’ progress on gender diversity and inclusion has stalled. Women are hopeful but remain frustrated, and men are increasingly hesitant to engage with women in fear of false accusations or skewed perceptions. To achieve equality, leaders need to prioritize decisive actions to create a more inclusive culture so all employees – women and men – feel safe and supported at work.
