The Mount has become a second home for the Sotto Voce quartet, which is made up of some of the world’s greatest low brass players, and pedagogues. Demondrae Thurman (Indiana University), Michael Forbes (UW La Crosse), Derek Fenstermacher (New Jersey Symphony, Manhattan School of Music) and the Mount’s own Mark Carlson make up the quartet. The quartet enthusiastically challenges preconceived notions about what tubas can do by composing, arranging, and commissioning virtuosic new works that highlight the diversity of their ensemble and its unique membership.
On September 24th they return to the Mount for several days of playing and teaching. They will also be joined by trombone soloist and pedagogue Julie Kyrgsman. In addition to coaching the Mount Wind Ensemble and holding a closed masterclass for instrumental music majors (BA with concentration in music), the guest artists will give a public masterclass 9.24 from 12-1:30 and concert with the Mount St. Mary’s University Wind Ensemble 9.24 at 2:30.
